Houston Area Model Council, Inc.

Dedicated on August 16, 1986, the Houston Area Model Council, Inc. located in George Bush Park became the premier place for radio control, control line, and free flight model airplane flying in the southwest United States.
This facility is designed to accommodate even the most enthusiastic hobbyist.  This facility has drawn model aircraft enthusiasts from considerable distances.  The facility features a covered preparation area, individual flight stations, a large landing and take off area, considerable parking for the user and spectator, a concession restroom building and many more amenities.
The model airport proposal was originally proposed by Mr. Rollie McGinnis.  After several years of conducting environmental impact studies and actual construction, the world-class facility opened in August 1986.
By lease agreement with Harris County, the facility is operated by the Houston Area Model Council, Inc.  The annual cost for membership is $48.00.  The cost includes one-year membership into the Academy of Model Aeronautics, a two million dollar liability insurance policy and a year's subscription to the group's monthly magazine.

For liability reasons, restrictions are in place to keep non-insured participants from flying.

Commander Dick Scobee The facility is named Dick Scobee Field in honor of Commander Dick Scobee.

The Challenger Learning Center in Houston, created in memory of the Challenger STS 51-L crew, provides educational opportunities for children that get them excited about space and science.
