Park History

Bear Creek Pioneers Park occupies part of the Addicks Reservoir, created by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers in the 1940's to prevent a repetition of a disastrous flood that had done great damage to Houston in 1935.  The area that is now the reservoir had been occupied for 100 years previously by farmers, most of them immigrants from Germany and their descendants.

Harris County leased 2,154 acres of the reservoir in 1965 and started the park development. Bear Creek Pioneers Park is named for one of the creeks that flows through the area, creating one of the major tributaries of Buffalo Bayou.  The park and the entire reservoir are subject to flooding but most of the land is dry most of the time.

The main office of the Precinct 3 Parks Department is here.  The Houston Farm and Ranch Club has its headquarters and rodeo arena here.  The County Texas Cooperative Extension & Test Garden office is here and there is a Community Center.  Other features include a lighted walking trail, an equestrian trail, a small zoo and aviary, an array of playgrounds, soccer, little league and softball fields, four lighted tennis courts, eight picnic pavilions, horseshoe courts, and hundreds of picnic tables and grills.

A concessionaire operates the Bear Creek Golf World on the park property. (e-mail: bcgwgolf@swbell.net)

The Harris County War Memorial is located in this park, just inside the Eldridge Parkway entrance.  The Memorial was built in 1985 to honor all of the known residents who lost their lives in our nation's wars since, and including World War I.  Memorial  services are held at the War Memorial every Memorial Day at 2:00 p.m..
