PEACOCK

Peacock Photo

The peafowl is a native of India. The male peafowl is called a peacock and the female is called a peahen.

The peacock has a fan-shaped crest, metallic blue head, royal blue neck and upper body, and long ornamental train. The train is not actually the peacock's tail. It is comprised of 100-150 upper tail coverts, which are supported by 20 retrices, which are the true tail feathers.

The peahen has a chestnut-brown crest and neck with feathers that are bordered with bronzy green. The female lacks the long tail feathers of the male.
