Archbishop Joseph A. Fiorenza Park occupies part of a site the Harris County Flood Control District acquired in 1988 for the district's system of detention ponds to relieve flooding on Brays Bayou. The Flood Control District and Harris County agreed in 1998 to share the use of the site.

Precinct 3 Commissioner Steve Radack installed two playgrounds, two gazebos and a lighted walking trail.  One of the playgrounds was created by the United Way Kids' Way program.  The park occupies 12-1/2 acres.  It was opened and dedicated on June 11, 1999.

At the time the park was dedicated, Joseph A. Fiorenza was Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Galveston-Houston.  He was elevated to Archbishop when the Diocese became an Archdiocese in 2004 and became Archbishop Emeritus when he retired in 2006.  Joseph A. Fiorenza was born in Beaumont on January 25, 1931.  He graduated from St. Anthony High School  in 1947, then entered St. Mary's Seminary where he was ordained in May 1954.  Father Fiorenza served at Queen of Peace Church, Dominican College, Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral, St. Augustine Church, St. Benedict Church, and Assumption Church, all in Houston.
