The property that became Flag Tree Park was acquired by Harris County in 1967 for the junction of Memorial Drive and San Felipe Road in the Village of Piney Point. The triangular-shaped fragment of left-over right-of-way was maintained by the community for about thirty years before Harris County Precinct 3 assumed responsibility for it. It is just one and a half acres, a handy rest stop for Piney Point joggers. Piney Point, on Buffalo Bayou, was originally called Pine Point and there was a little settlement at Pine Point before the City of Houston was founded. There was a sawmill operated by John D. Taylor and Pine Point was a stopping place on the original wagon road from the port of Harrisburg to Stephen F. Austin's colonial headquarters at San Felipe in what is now called Austin County.
