Park History

J.R. Hatch Park, formerly known as Sport Park and located at 17525 Katy Freeway, was developed by Harris County Precinct Three Commissioner Steve Radack after the county bought five acres and several vacant buildings nearby to construct a command headquarters for the Precinct 5 Constable’s Office in 1993.

That project lead to the purchase of an adjacent tract of land to the west from the Resolution Trust Corporation. The park is now located on that tract of land and occupies just under three acres. It was named for the late Sgt. J.R. Hatch in November 2007.

After a career with the Houston Police Department, Sgt. Hatch served the people of Harris County in the Precinct 5 Constable’s Office for 19 years. He was a graduate of the University of Houston Police Academy and served in the HPD Mounted Patrol. He was certified as a motorcycle and bicycle officer and as a police instructor.

Commissioner Radack, who was then serving as Precinct 5 Constable, hired Hatch in 1985. Hatch worked through Commissioner Radack’s tenure as constable. He then served under the late Constable Glen Cheek, who also served as Commissioner Radack’s Chief Deputy in the constable’s office.

During his career with Precinct 5, Hatch reached the rank of Sergeant of Special Operations and Master Police Officer.
