Hockley Park History
Hockley Park occupies part of a site Harris County acquired in 1982.  The Hockley Community Center shares the site.
The park is in the Hockley community near the northwest corner of Harris County.  It features a gazebo, walking trail, horseshoe court, picnic tables, and barbecue grills.
This is a small park, just ten acres, but it is in the process of being enlarged.  Precinct 3 Commissioner Steve Radack is planning to build a Soap Box Derby race course on an adjoining piece of property the county has just acquired.  Soap Box racers have no engines and use gravity to propel them.  Since land in the Hockley area is flat, Precinct 3 will build an artificial hill on the site to "power" the racers.
Hockley Park is named for the community of Hockley and the community was named for a hero of the Texas Revolution.  George Washington Hockley established the community in 1835.  He was Sam Houston's chief of staff during the San Jacinto campaign and he commanded what artillery there was at the Battle of San Jacinto.  Hockley later served as Secretary of War during the days of the Republic.
