| The City of
Houston acquired this park site in the 1980s from the developers during
the early stages of the development of Eldridge Parkway. The actual
development of the park was several years off, on the city's timetable, so
Precinct 3 Commissioner Steve Radack and John Kelley, then the District G
City Council member worked out an agreement for the county to lease the
site and build the park.
The agreement was signed in 1996 and work started right away. The park was completed and opened April 7, 1998. The name was a surprise that Commissioner Radack did not disclose until near the end of the program opening the park. Ray Miller, a member of the commissioner's staff, was the emcee for the program. Like nearly everybody else, he thought the name was going to be Parkway Park. Miller is a former TV journalist best known for "The Eyes of Texas" program. Ray Miller Park occupies 15 acres. The features include a lighted walking trail, restrooms, parking lot, picnic tables and grills, a gazebo, two playgrounds, a butterfly garden and a special children's play area called Denise's Playground, a memorial to the late Denise Eads. |
