The Harris County Flood Control District bought this 139 acre property in 1986 for flood control and recreational purposes. It straddles Little Cypress Creek. It fronts Roberts Road, 7/10th of a mile north of U.S. 290, near Hockley. The park was called Roberts Road Park before development began. Former Precinct 3 Commissioner Liz Ghrist proposed the name change in 1988 at the suggestion of Minnie Lee Zube Rayburn. Mrs. Rayburn's father, Mr. Theo Zube was a Harris County Commissioner from 1903 to 1914. Mr. Zube also once owned the land where the park is located so his daughter thought Zube would be an appropriate name for the park. Commissioner Ghrist thought so, too. More than half of the property here is still heavily wooded. The park development has been concentrated in the section fronting Roberts Road. There is a soccer complex with six fields, a parking lot, a concession building, rest rooms, and an asphalt walking trail. Zube Park is best known for its railroad. An organization of model railroad buffs called the Houston Area Live Steamers has built an elaborate layout in the northwest part of the park. The track and rolling stock are about 1/8 the size of real railroad equipment but big enough to carry passengers. In return for the space and support, the HALS members offer free rides to the public one Saturday each month. See Special Features or the HALS Web site www.hals.org for more information. |
